Darwin, October 20: Moscow has reaffirmed its full support for Tehran just hours after US President Donald Trump remarked that Russia was doing very little to assist Iran. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Iran’s cause was just. Euronews reported.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Monday (October 19), Lavrov said, “I am confident that Iran’s goals are just, just like Russia’s.”
He accused the United States and Israel of launching unprovoked military operations against Iran and pledged continued Russian support for Tehran.
A few hours earlier, Trump had written in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday that Russia was providing very little assistance to Iran compared with what it was capable of doing.
Trump wrote, “Russia is doing very little, if anything at all, to help the Islamic Republic of Iran. Compared with what they could do, their assistance is very limited. I want the situation to remain that way.”
Trump defended his position against easing economic pressure on Russia, arguing that he wanted to keep negotiations open to end the war in Ukraine. He expressed concern that imposing new sanctions could drive Moscow away from the negotiating table.
He wrote, “I am negotiating peace between Russia and Ukraine. I do not want to do anything that would foolishly push Russia away from the negotiating table.”
During his visit to Tehran, Lavrov said Russia remained ready to help find a diplomatic solution to the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. He said the crisis had been created by military actions taken by Washington and Tel Aviv.
Lavrov said, “We have once again expressed our country’s readiness to help find a mutually acceptable solution to overcome this artificially created crisis.”
He welcomed Tehran’s willingness to pursue a diplomatic path towards resolving the conflict. At the same time, he called for a return to the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz that existed before the conflict began. This would include restoring freedom of navigation and securing guarantees against further military attacks.
Lavrov claimed that Moscow had worked to prevent attempts at the United Nations to legitimise attacks by the United States and Israel. He also said Russia was providing humanitarian assistance to Iran, including medicines and regular food supplies.
Alongside its diplomatic support, Lavrov made clear that Russia intended to maintain its economic ties with Iran. He said, “Despite the difficult circumstances, Russia has no plans to abandon the implementation of its agreements with Iran in the economic and investment sectors.”
In the same Truth Social post, Trump also criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He alleged that continued Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries were disrupting diesel supplies on the global market.
Trump claimed that Ukrainian attacks were hurting American farmers, businesses and consumers, rather than Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or the US war involving Iran. He also praised Russia for agreeing to supply diesel at relatively low prices on international markets.
Trump further accused Zelenskyy of showing little interest in ending the war. He claimed that Ukraine had previously missed opportunities to reach a more favourable settlement.
Recently, Washington suspended a new package of sanctions against Russia and eased certain restrictions on Russian diesel. The moves have drawn criticism amid concerns that they could increase Russia’s revenue while the war in Ukraine continues.
The White House has said the policy decisions were part of efforts to keep peace negotiations on track and ease pressure on global energy markets.
