Darwin, October 27: Shahj alal Rumi, the father of a child who was allegedly sexually abused at a madrasa in Tongi, Gazipur, near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, has left the country. His departure comes after he reportedly received persistent threats from Qawmi religious scholars, people affiliated with the Qawmi community and groups identifying themselves as Tawhidi Janata.
Rumi’s family confirmed the news to Kalbela on Monday night (October 26).
According to family sources, he is no longer in Bangladesh. They said Rumi is no longer dwelling on the matter and has wished the people of Bangladesh well. However, his current whereabouts remain unknown.
Rumi had previously accused the principal of Qariul Quran International Cadet Madrasa of making false statements.
“Despite being a religious scholar, he has told many lies and continues to do so,” Rumi said.
On October 21, allegations emerged that a seven-year-old student had been sexually abused at Qariul Quran International Cadet Madrasa in the Auchpara area of Tongi.
Following the allegations, the child’s father, Shahjalal Rumi, assaulted the madrasa teacher, Md Moslem Uddin. The accused teacher was subsequently handed over to the police.
A video of the incident circulated on social media, sparking widespread discussion and criticism across the country.
Soon after the incident, Rumi filed a case alleging sexual abuse at Tongi West Police Station.
Later, the madrasa principal filed a counter-case against the child’s father, accusing him of various offences, including the theft of Tk 1.7 million.
Rumi largely disappeared from public view after the counter-case was filed. His family has now confirmed that he has left Bangladesh.
