Darwin, September 8 — Despite past disagreements over issues such as trade tariffs and India’s participation in BRICS, former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “close friend.”
According to a report by Indian news outlet The Sentinel, Trump made the remarks during a conversation with journalists at the White House on Saturday.
“Modi is a great Prime Minister and a close friend of mine. I will always maintain a friendship with him,” said Trump.
He added, “There is a special relationship between India and the United States. There’s nothing to worry about.”
When asked about a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he appeared to suggest that India was falling under China’s influence, Trump dismissed the concern outright.
“I don’t think so,” he replied briefly.
During the exchange, Trump also recalled his recent meeting with Modi, saying:
“You know, I have a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi. He was here a few months ago, and we went to the Rose Garden together.”
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded positively to Trump’s remarks. After Indian news agency ANI shared Trump’s comments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Modi reposted it, saying:
“I deeply value President Trump’s feelings and positive assessment of the India-U.S. relationship, and I return the same respect to him.
India and the U.S. share a very positive and forward-looking comprehensive global strategic partnership.”
However, Trump’s praise came just a day after he stirred controversy with a post on Truth Social that read:
“It looks like we have lost India and Russia to deep, dark China. Hopefully, their future will be long and prosperous together.”
While the post sparked concerns among analysts, Trump’s latest comments seem aimed at reaffirming the strength of India-U.S. ties and his personal rapport with Modi.
