Darwin, September 8 — For the fourth consecutive week, thousands of people have taken to the streets of Washington, D.C., protesting against the federal control imposed by the Trump administration, according to a report by NBC News.
Carrying placards reading “Trump Must Go Now,” “End the Occupation of D.C.,” and “Resist Tyranny,” demonstrators strongly condemned the President’s recent actions.
The protest, titled “We Are All D.C.”, was organized by various local rights groups and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Marching nearly two miles through the city center, the protesters gathered near the White House. This has been one of the largest coordinated demonstrations against the federal takeover initiated by Trump.
Last month, President Trump declared a state of emergency in Washington, D.C., citing rising crime rates. He placed the city’s police under federal authority and deployed National Guard troops.
Although the administration justified the move by pointing to rising crime and homelessness, official data shows that violent crime in Washington is currently at its lowest in 30 years.
Many protestors view Trump’s actions as a blatant interference in local governance and an abuse of power. They argue it is merely a political show of force under the pretext of crime control.
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has even filed a lawsuit, calling the troop deployment unconstitutional.
Protesters claim the presence of armed federal forces has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation for local residents.
One demonstrator said, “We’re standing against authoritarian rule. Federal police and the National Guard must be removed from our streets.”
The Trump administration, however, insists that their crackdown has been effective — stating that over 1,900 individuals have been arrested and nearly 200 firearms seized since the emergency was declared.
Still, many local officials and residents argue that such military-style enforcement poses a threat to the democratic fabric of the city.
This wave of protests comes as the 30-day emergency order issued by Trump nears expiration. Congress has reportedly shown no intention of extending it.
However, several media outlets report that House Republicans are preparing to introduce new bills aimed at expanding federal control over the city.
