Darwin, 24 September-
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the membership of the United States, citing long-standing failures in governance and non-compliance with the global body’s constitutional requirements.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a significant blow to the progress of cricket in America, a country where the sport has been attempting to gain firm footing.
According to the ICC, the United States cricket board repeatedly failed to meet international standards of management, financial accountability, and organizational transparency. Despite repeated warnings and opportunities to resolve the issues, the board’s inability to comply with regulations forced the ICC to take the drastic measure of suspension.
With this decision, the U.S. cricket board will lose all rights and privileges associated with full membership. This includes participation in ICC’s Annual General Meetings, voting on global cricket matters, and receiving development funds from the governing body. In addition, the country will face restrictions in terms of official representation at ICC events until the suspension is lifted.
The timing of the suspension is particularly damaging. Cricket in the United States has been experiencing gradual growth, especially following the launch of Major League Cricket (MLC) and the hosting of several matches of the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on U.S. soil. These developments had generated significant excitement among fans and investors, creating hopes of building a sustainable cricket ecosystem.
However, the suspension now casts a shadow over that momentum. Experts fear that without ICC’s recognition and financial support, the administration of the game in America will face difficulties in maintaining domestic competitions, developing infrastructure, and expanding the player base. The credibility of U.S. cricket, both domestically and internationally, has been put into question.
Still, some analysts view the decision as an opportunity for reform. They argue that the ICC’s action could serve as a wake-up call for American cricket authorities to overhaul their governance structure. If U.S. officials take decisive steps toward transparency, accountability, and structural improvements, the country may eventually rejoin the ICC with a stronger and more credible foundation.
For now, the suspension stands as a major setback for American cricket. Whether it becomes the end of U.S. ambitions in the sport—or the beginning of a much-needed transformation—will depend entirely on how the country’s cricket board responds to the ICC’s demands.
