Arrest Made After Police Assault and Escape in Wadeye

Wadeye – A 28-year-old man who escaped from police custody in Wadeye on Tuesday has been arrested after presenting himself at the Wadeye Police Station.

The man, who was initially taken into custody over an alleged breach of a Domestic Violence Order (DVO), had fled while still wearing handcuffs after community members allegedly turned on police during the arrest. An officer was struck in the head with a rock during the disturbance and required medical treatment for non-serious injuries.

Northern Territory Police confirmed that the man surrendered without further incident and remains in custody, with charges expected to follow.

Police also confirmed that two additional men and one woman have been arrested in connection with the incident. Charges against them are also expected.

Authorities continue to urge the community to support police operations and report any information to 131 444, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
