LISBON, Oct 15, 2025 — In a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier, Cristiano Ronaldo scored two historic goals to set a new all-time record for goals scored in World Cup qualifying, but his Portugal side were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by Hungary, forcing them to delay their qualification for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The 40-year-old superstar’s brace brought his World Cup qualifying tally to 41 goals, moving him two clear of the previous record holder, former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz (39).
Szoboszlai Strikes Late to Deny Qualification
With England securing their spot earlier by beating Latvia 5-0, Portugal were just minutes away from joining them and clinching top spot in Group F. However, in the 91st minute, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai grabbed a dramatic equaliser from close range to snatch a vital point for Hungary and deny the home side the victory they needed.
Hungary had taken an early lead in the eighth minute through Attila Szalai, set up by a corner from Szoboszlai. However, Ronaldo quickly pulled Portugal level in the 22nd minute by connecting with Nélson Semedo’s low cross, scoring his record-breaking 40th qualifying goal.
Ronaldo, who now has a remarkable 948 goals in his professional career and 143 for his country, secured his double just before half-time with a composed finish following a delivery from Nuno Mendes, putting Portugal ahead 2-1 before the late drama.
Despite the draw, Portugal maintains a commanding five-point lead at the top of Group F with two matches remaining. Hungary remains second in the group, one point ahead of the Republic of Ireland.
Portugal’s next opportunity to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup will be on November 13th when they travel to Dublin to face the Republic of Ireland.
In his illustrious 22-year international career, Ronaldo has helped Portugal lift the European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League on two occasions. His best World Cup performance remains a run to the semi-finals in 2006.
