TORONTO, CANADA – The Los Angeles Dodgers etched their name into baseball history, becoming the first team in 25 years to win consecutive World Series championships. In a dramatic, extra-innings Game 7 decider, the Dodgers overcame the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 at the Rogers Centre.
Catcher Will Smith was the hero, smashing a tie-breaking home run in the top of the 11th inning. The win was sealed when the Blue Jays’ Alejandro Kirk grounded into a double play with the potential tying run on third base, sparking wild celebrations from the visiting National League champions. The Dodgers, known for their high-powered offense, struggled early, trailing 3-0 after the third inning thanks to a massive three-run homer by Toronto’s Bo Bichette.
However, the team kept chipping away at the lead. Solo home runs from Max Muncy in the eighth and a clutch, last-gasp shot by Miguel Rojas in the top of the ninth inning off Jeff Hoffman leveled the score at 4-4, forcing extra innings.
The last team to achieve successive “Fall Classics” was the legendary New York Yankees dynasty of 1998–2000.Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani, the MLB’s most high-profile player, started on the mound for the Dodgers but ran into trouble in the third inning, culminating in Bichette’s homer. Under the “Ohtani rule,” he remained in the game as designated hitter, contributing to the offensive rally.
The dramatic contest, only the sixth World Series Game 7 in history to go to extra innings, saw both teams load the bases in the ninth and tenth innings, only to fail to score.
Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the winner in Games 2 and 6, claimed another win in relief and was named the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP).
