NAVI MUMBAI, INDIA – For the first time in 25 years, a new nation will etch its name onto the Women’s World Cup trophy as hosts India face South Africa in a monumental final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. The winner will claim their maiden World Cup title, a victory symbolic of the global growth of women’s cricket.

With a record prize purse of £3.3 million ($4.2 million) on the line, the final represents a watershed moment for both nations, whose teams are composed of players who have overcome significant systemic barriers.

For India, making their third final appearance (after 2005 and 2017), the stakes transcend finance; a win on home soil would signify a massive shift in reach, attention, and opportunity. A victory would validate a generation of talent, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, star batter Smriti Mandhana, and all-rounder Deepti Sharma.

The hosts ride a wave of intense national expectation following their “astonishing” semi-final victory over defending champions Australia. The fervor is palpable, with huge crowds gathering outside the stadium 24 hours ahead of the match, desperate for tickets and a glimpse of the team.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur emphasized the need for mental balance amidst the pressure:

“This is the biggest stage and biggest opportunity for us, playing in a home final. But I think the most important thing is that we have to enjoy this because there is nothing bigger than this in our life, as a cricketer and for me as a captain.”

South Africa’s journey to their first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup final has been marked by resilience. Known as a perennial “nearly” team in ICC events, the Proteas women are determined to follow their men’s side, who broke their own major trophy drought with a World Test Championship win earlier this year.

Despite some mid-tournament wobbles—being bowled out for under 100 twice—Laura Wolvaardt’s side delivered a stunning semi-final performance against England, led by Wolvaardt’s unforgettable 169 and a fiery 5-20 from veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp. Both are expected to be pivotal on Sunday.

Captain Wolvaardt acknowledged the psychological dynamics of the final: “It’s going to be a very tough game, with the whole crowd behind India… But at the same time I think it puts a lot of pressure on them as well. They have the whole country behind them and are sort of expected to win. I think that plays in our favour, hopefully.”

Regardless of who lifts the trophy, the final carries profound significance for women’s sport in both countries, where opportunities are often far less accessible than in cricketing heavyweights like Australia or England.

The teams are filled with stories of overcoming adversity:

Shafali Verma (India opener) disguised herself as a boy to enroll in a cricket academy.

Jemimah Rodrigues (India hero) grew up playing on the streets because girls’ teams didn’t exist.

Tazmin Brits (South Africa opener) successfully switched careers to cricket after a devastating car crash ended her Olympic javelin dream.

A full house is expected at the DY Patil Stadium, and a home victory could not only inspire a new generation of girls but, as 2017 World Cup winner Alex Hartley suggested, allow them to “just be girls who play cricket rather than having to pretend to be somebody else.”
