DUBAI, UAE — The tennis world is set for a nostalgic and controversial showdown. Top-ranked women’s player, Aryna Sabalenka, will face former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in a “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match at the 17,000-seat Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 28.
The match, which borrows its name from the iconic 1973 victory by Billie Jean King over Bobby Riggs, has confirmed unique rules designed to level the playing field between the four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka and the often-injured Australian showman.
Kyrgios, who has barely played in recent years due to injuries but said he is “feeling amazing,” outlined some of the handicaps he will face:
He will be allowed only one serve per point. He will be restricted to hitting toward a smaller side of the court.
Despite the restrictions, the flamboyant Australian, who lost the 2022 Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic, remains supremely confident. Kyrgios has publicly predicted he will win easily.
Sabalenka confirmed the match discussions during the US Open, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated non-tour matches of the year.
The one-off event brings together two of tennis’s biggest personalities, known for their power and showmanship. Both players will also participate in a New York exhibition on December 8, though in separate matches: Sabalenka against Naomi Osaka and Kyrgios facing Tommy Paul.
For Kyrgios, the exhibition marks a major step in his return to the court, emphasizing his desire to “travel the world, see my fans and play some amazing tennis.”
