Gout Gout’s final school athletics carnival will be remembered not for a broken record, but for a remarkable act of sportsmanship. The Australian sprint sensation chose to sit out the individual 100m and 200m events at the GPS Track and Field Championships in Queensland on Friday, opting instead to compete solely for the Ipswich Grammar relay team.
This “selfless decision” allows other competitors a chance to “perhaps take home gold” in the prestigious events, according to reporter Georgie Chumbley.
A Class Act Before Graduation
The 17-year-old superstar, who is in his final year of school, is known for his history-making speed. Late last year, Gout broke Peter Norman’s 56-year-old 200m national record, and at the age of 16, he surpassed Usain Bolt’s 200m mark set at the same age.
Fresh off a world championships debut in Japan where he reached the semi-finals, Gout’s participation at the school event underscores his commitment to his team and his grounded approach.
“He’s such an incredible sport, an amazing athlete, but also it just seems like he’s got a really good head on his shoulders,” Chumbley noted.
Fans Miss Out on a Glimpse
While the Olympic-bound champion’s gesture was widely praised, it left some junior school children disappointed. Many had arrived early at the Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre hoping to see Gout in action.
Unfortunately, many were reportedly ordered back to school after finishing their own competitions, meaning they would only catch a glimpse of the track superstar warming up.
Gout Gout’s final school events—the 400m race and the 4x100m relay—were scheduled for later that evening, marking a memorable farewell to his school athletics career.
