Former England captains Ian Botham and Geoffrey Boycott have delivered sharp criticism of the current England team’s minimalist approach to preparation for the upcoming five-match Ashes clash against Australia, which begins next Friday at Optus Stadium.
Botham, speaking at an event for the 150th anniversary Test in 2027, stated bluntly that the lack of proper practice matches is “not the way I would prepare.” He emphasized the need for acclimatisation and factoring in the local atmosphere: “You have to remember there’s 24.5 million people you’re playing against, not 11.”
Boycott echoed this sentiment in his column for the UK Telegraph, labelling the preparation as “madness” and bordering on “foolish” for a series of this magnitude. He argued that competitive matches are crucial for fine-tuning skills under pressure, suggesting that any English victory would be in spite of the preparation, not because of it.
A major point of concern for Botham is the fitness of England’s fast-bowling cartel, spearheaded by Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, both of whom have struggled with injuries over the years.
“If the England bowlers stay fit, which doesn’t happen very often – but if they can stay fit and the captain can play a full part, I think England have got a real chance,” Botham conceded.
Despite the criticism over preparation, Botham is supportive of the team’s aggressive, ‘Bazball’ approach, stating, “I think it’s the right way… I think the days of one or 1.5 runs per over are gone.” He shrugged off the criticism of the aggressive mindset, noting it is similar to how England played throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
