Darwin, 21 March : The AFC Asian Cup final was held on home soil, and naturally, there was immense excitement among Australian fans. The 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium was packed to the brim. In front of the full house, however, the hosts Australia suffered heartbreak as Japan defeated them to win the Women’s Asian Cup.

On Saturday, in a thrilling AFC Asian Cup final, Japan beat Australia 1–0 to claim the championship. The hero of the title-deciding match was Japan’s Maika Hamano.

This marks Japan’s fourth Asian title. After winning in 2014 and 2018, they have now lifted the trophy again in 2026. Playing their seventh final, Japan once again secured the crown of Asia.

Japan took the lead early in the match. In the 17th minute, Maika Hamano turned brilliantly about five meters outside the penalty box and fired a powerful shot. Australia’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold dived but could not reach the ball. Japan went ahead in the first half.

They held on to that lead until the end. Despite an intense exchange of attacks, no further goals were scored.

Australia actually had more possession and attacking chances throughout the match. The Matildas controlled the ball 52% of the time and launched 16 attacks toward Japan’s goal, six of which were on target.

However, they failed to break through Japan’s defense. Instead, the former world champions held on to their early lead and left the field celebrating victory.
