Dramatic footage has surfaced showing a volatile police encounter in Melbourne’s Heidelberg that culminated in an arrest involving the deployment of a taser.
Police were called to Waterdale Road at approximately 3.45 pm after receiving reports of a man “behaving erratically” inside a car.
According to a Victoria Police spokesperson, the situation quickly escalated after officers asked the man to exit the passenger seat of the vehicle.
“Police will allege the man became aggressive and spat at an officer before a taser was deployed,” the spokesperson said.
Video captured by a passerby shows the man stumbling toward police after the initial confrontation. An officer is seen discharging the weapon, striking the man in the torso.
In a shocking display, the man allegedly pulled one of the taser wires out and turned to walk away, all while receiving a shock of up to 50,000 volts.
He was only brought to his knees after a second taser discharge struck his shoulder, allowing Victoria Police to surround and finally arrest him as onlookers watched from nearby homes.
The man, who is of no fixed address, was subsequently charged with one count each of criminal damage and assaulting police.
