DOMESTIC CRICKET — The weekend’s domestic cricket action was dominated by a sensational century from Tasmanian opener Caleb Jewell, who spearheaded his side’s response after a significant declaration by New South Wales (NSW).
NSW, batting first, declared their innings closed on Day Two at 9-391. Their score was built primarily on the back of a solid 80 from Kurtis Patterson and 43 from opener Sam Konstas. Tasmania’s best bowler was quick Riley Meredith, who finished with figures of 3-77.
In a surprising move, Jewell walked out with an unexpected opening partner: left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann. Kuhnemann held up an end, scoring a solid 21 before he was eventually strangled down the legside, caught behind off the bowling of Liam Hatcher.
Jewell, however, pushed on to reach a crucial century, ensuring the home side avoided a top-order collapse. The opener eventually departed for 102 after nicking off-spinner Ollie Davies to first slip. His century was the main highlight for the home side as they look to build a strong total in response to the Blues’ imposing declaration.

In the other Shield matches, Queensland opener Matt Renshaw continued his strong domestic form, scoring a vital half-century that will keep the Australian national selectors firmly on notice for potential future Test match opportunities.
Conversely, West Australian opener Cameron Bancroft struggled to make an impact against South Australia, falling cheaply for just 9 runs at the top of the order.
In the supplementary tour match at Lilac Hill between the Cricket Australia XI and the England Lions, two English hopefuls missed a chance to cement their claims. Jacob Bethell, batting at No.3, missed an opportunity to pressure current England opener Zak Crawley with a big score, falling for 44. Fellow England hopeful Will Jacks only managed a start, finishing with 30.
