SYDNEY : The Perth Scorchers Women demonstrated clinical efficiency in the 25th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), achieving a comfortable four-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades Women by successfully chasing down 151.
The Scorchers’ victory was defined by a single, explosive factor: a blistering start from captain Sophie Devine.
Batting first, the Melbourne Renegades made a solid start, reaching 30/1 in the Powerplay. They crossed the 50-run mark in 6.5 overs, but consistent wickets stifled their momentum. At the drinks break, the scoreboard read 70/4, with Georgia Wareham and Deandra Dottin attempting to stabilize the innings.
Despite reaching 100 in the 14th over, the loss of wickets at critical junctures prevented any late acceleration. The innings concluded dramatically, with the Renegades bowled out for 150 off the final ball of the 20th over. Wicket-keeper Nicole Faltum anchored the lower order with a defiant 41 not out to ensure her side posted a competitive total.
The Scorchers’ reply was immediate and brutal. Powerplay 1 yielded a massive 51 runs without loss, driven almost entirely by Devine’s onslaught. The team rocketed to 50 in just 3.6 overs.
Devine’s dazzling display saw her smash 46 runs off just 24 deliveries, ensuring the opening partnership reached 50 runs off a mere 24 balls.
Though Devine departed soon after, the damage was done. At the drinks break, the Scorchers were well in control at 89/2, with Beth Mooney (27) anchoring the chase. The Scorchers crossed 150 in the 18th over and finished the chase comfortably in 18.4 overs, with four wickets in hand.
Devine’s destructive early burst meant the required run rate never posed a threat, allowing the middle order to navigate the rest of the innings with minimal pressure.
Match Summary: Melbourne Renegades Women 150/10 (20 ov) lost to Perth Scorchers Women 151/6 (18.4 ov) by 4 wickets.
