Man Utd Legend Reflects on Iconic Goal and Managerial Sacking

LONDON:  Manchester United icon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered a rare, candid look into his legendary playing career and challenging managerial tenure at Old Trafford, emphasizing his mindset as a player and the extraordinary pressures of the top job.

Solskjaer, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for the club, recently sat down with Kelly Somers for an extensive interview.

The Norwegian’s playing career will forever be headlined by his injury-time winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final, a goal that sealed the historic Treble.

Solskjaer recalled the emotional rollercoaster of that night at the Nou Camp: “I was 80 minutes on the bench like really unhappy with the manager—’why don’t you put me on?’—and we’re losing the game… then I managed to play 15 minutes.” He stressed that those 15 minutes were “life-changing” and transformed him from a good player into a piece of football history.

His reputation as the ultimate “super sub” stemmed from this mindset. “Defenders are tired, I can come on, I can make a difference, I’m fresh,” he said, revealing he would even root for the team to concede a goal when winning to increase his chance of being introduced.

Solskjaer returned to manage the Red Devils from 2018 to 2021, guiding them to second place in the Premier League and the Europa League final in 2021. He accepted his eventual sacking after a six-week poor spell, recognizing that results are paramount at a club like United.

Yet, he suggested that his tenure is now being viewed more favorably by fans and pundits, especially given the club’s struggles since his departure. He pointed out the intense competition.

“It was the worst time to be the manager of Manchester United. You have Jurgen Klopp with his Liverpool team and you have Pep Guardiola with his Manchester City team. Best managers in the world at the time… But we got second and third. We had something going but we couldn’t take the next steps.”

For Solskjaer, managing the club was a privilege, a sentiment echoed by a famous exchange with Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, who walked into his technical area and joked the job was “too much pressure.” Solskjaer’s internal response: “Pressure is a privilege.”
