Australia: England captain Ben Stokes has publicly addressed the intense wave of criticism aimed at his team following their humiliating two-day defeat by Australia in the first Ashes Test in Perth.
Speaking for the first time since the loss, Stokes drew a clear line at the most damaging allegation leveled by former Australia pace bowler Mitchell Johnson, who called the tourists “arrogant” and “cocky Poms.”
“You can call us rubbish, call us whatever you want,” Stokes told BBC Sport. “Arrogant might be a little bit too far, but that’s OK. We’ll take the rough with the smooth. I’d rather words like ‘rubbish,’ but ‘arrogant,’ I’m not so sure about that.”
Adding fuel to the fire was England’s decision not to send any of the starting XI from Perth to play in the England Lions’ pink-ball match against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra—despite the quick loss leaving them with unexpected downtime.
Stokes defended the choice, which was questioned by former captains like Michael Vaughan and supported by others like Michael Atherton. He stated the decision was made to keep the team morale high and because the slow, low pitch in Canberra would not provide useful conditions for preparing for the pace and heat of the day-night Gabba Test.
“We then discuss that and decide what we think is the best preparation,” Stokes said, stressing that they are focused on using their time wisely in Brisbane, where training sessions were curtailed by rain on Saturday.
England’s second-innings collapse in Perth—losing nine wickets for 99 runs, including the calamitous dismissals of Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, and Joe Root—has led to questions about the team’s aggressively attacking ‘Bazball’ style.
Stokes conceded that his team could have been “a lot better” in execution but insisted they must “stay true to the beliefs of how we play our cricket.”
Three Ashes squad members not in the first Test XI—Jacob Bethell, Josh Tongue, and Matthew Potts—have joined the Lions. The rest of the squad is now training in Brisbane ahead of the second Test at the Gabba, which begins on Thursday, 4 December.
