IKON PARK: The North Melbourne Kangaroos cemented their status as an AFLW dynasty on Saturday, overwhelming the Brisbane Lions to claim a historic back-to-back premiership. The final score of 9.2 (56) to 2.4 (16) reflected an absolute mauling that shocked commentators.
The victory extends the club’s unprecedented winning streak to 27 games, a streak ironically kick-started after their last defeat: the 2023 Grand Final loss to the very same Brisbane Lions.
The Kangaroos were led by masterful performances in the midfield and attack.
Eilish Sheerin (Best on Ground): The star recruit was unstoppable, posting 28 disposals, nine clearances, and two crucial first-half goals. Sheerin polled the maximum three votes from all four judges to be crowned best afield.
Jenna Bruton: The midfielder was the leading scoresheet threat, capping off the day with three majors, including two rapid-fire goals late in the fourth quarter to push the margin out to 40 points.
While Brisbane struck the opening goal via Charlotte Mullins, the reigning champions quickly capitalized on the Lions’ errors and ill-discipline. A crucial turning point came in the second quarter when veteran Shannon Campbell conceded two immediate 50-metre penalties for a protection zone infringement, gifting Kate Shierlaw a goal from the goal line. This mistake seemed to deflate the Lions, allowing the Kangaroos to build a commanding 22-point buffer at the main break.
Despite a late consolation goal from forward Ruby Svarc, the contest was effectively settled in the final term when Kangaroos captain Jasmine Garner converted a turnover deep in the Lions’ defensive 50.
