NORTH ST MARYS, NSW — A colossal factory fire at a waste management business in Sydney’s west is expected to burn for several days, despite the valiant efforts of approximately 200 firefighters who tackled the massive blaze overnight.
Emergency services were first called to the business on Kurrajong Street, North St Marys, around 10:50 pm last night. The inferno began dramatically, with reports of powerful explosions that were felt several kilometers away, including in Penrith.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying sight as a massive fireball shot 150 metres high above the site. The intensity of the initial blast was evident, with concrete blocks and large chunks of rock reportedly thrown 150 metres into the air, initially hindering efforts to combat the raging flames.
Fire Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell praised the efforts of the crews, noting the extreme conditions they faced. “There’s been some amazing firefighting going on,” he said, adding that “we’ve had an incredibly large explosion, and so luckily all of our firefighters were able to be safe through that.” Two firefighters required treatment at the scene for minor burns.
The challenge now lies in the type of business involved: a recycling centre containing hazardous materials. Authorities warn that these materials are actively feeding the blaze, suggesting the fire could continue to burn for days.
Explosions continued throughout the morning. An exclusion zone of 200 metres remains in place, and police are urging motorists to avoid the area.
As toxic smoke continues to billow from the site, locals in the area have been warned to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution against the fumes. Fire crews deployed drones equipped with air monitoring devices to map the spread of the toxic smoke and inform their containment strategy.
While firefighting efforts have been scaled back to allow investigations to begin, the cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. Police are conducting their own parallel investigation into the incident.
