Aussie Veteran’s All-Round Dominance Leaves England Staring at Defeat

Starc

Australia : While tourists flocked to Queensland’s wineries, the finest vintage in the state was at the Gabba, where Mitchell Starc delivered a brutal, all-round performance that has left England facing the barrel of a second successive Ashes defeat.

Closing in on his 36th birthday, Starc showed no sign of slowing, following up his 10-113 match figures in the first Test with a performance that both devastated England with the ball and broke their spirits with the bat.

Starc arrived at the crease on day two with Australia holding a modest first-innings lead of 49. By the time he was finally dismissed, caught by England captain Ben Stokes on the verge of dusk, the lead had ballooned to an insurmountable 157.

His stoic, yet punishing, knock of 77 off 141 balls single-handedly took the game away from the tourists. While he played shorter balls on merit, his strike-rate touched 200 against anything pitched up, demonstrating a tailored approach that exposed England’s bowling.

The damage was substantial: Australia was eventually bowled out for 511, securing a commanding first-innings lead of 177.

Starc’s contribution cemented a phenomenal personal achievement, placing him in an elite club of Ashes legends.

He became only the fifth player to record a five-for in the first innings and score a half-century in the second of an Ashes Test since 1963. He is also only the second Australian seamer to achieve this feat since the dominant left-armer Mitchell Johnson in the 2013-14 series.

Former England captain Alastair Cook summarized the impact: “Mitchell Starc destroyed England’s top order with the ball and now he is breaking their hearts with the bat.” With the pink ball now in his hand again, Starc is poised to inflict further damage as the match moves into the evening session.
