LONDON: Noni Madueke’s two-goal masterclass in Arsenal’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Club Brugge on Wednesday night was a significant statement, confirming the 23-year-old’s readiness to be more than just a rotation option for Mikel Arteta.
Madueke’s performance was crowned by a stunning 20-yard strike, which Arsenal manager Arteta hailed as “An unbelievable goal. When you talk about individual quality and magic moments, that’s it.”
The England international, signed from Chelsea for £48.5 million in the summer, has the tough task of dislodging key player Bukayo Saka on the right wing. However, against Club Brugge, Madueke seized his opportunity, delivering an “all-action performance” and making history as the first Arsenal player to score his first three goals for the club all in European competition.
Madueke himself acknowledged the need for elevation, stating his minimum requirement is to provide “threat” but recognizing the need for consistent output. “That’s the next level I need to get to in terms of being consistently decisive for club and country. I think I can reach that level,” he told TNT Sports.
His performance earned high praise from pundits, including BBC Match of the Day’s Chris Sutton. “More and more, Madueke looks like a really smart signing,” the former Chelsea striker said. “Arsenal can have Saka off that right side, or use [Madueke]. It bodes really well for them with such a busy period coming up.”
Now back from a knee injury suffered in September, Madueke has been challenged by Arteta to maintain his high standards. “It’s about consistency. So any player that plays is willing to have those standards and play consistently,” Arteta said. “It’s not a game, it’s two games, three games. It’s when you do 10 games in a row every three days—and that’s the level that we have to hit.”
