MELBOURNE : England’s nightmare Ashes tour has suffered a devastating blow with the news that pace spearhead Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the remainder of the series.
Archer, who had been England’s standout performer despite the 3-0 series deficit, has sustained a side strain. The injury, confirmed by a scan in Melbourne on Tuesday, brings an abrupt end to a resilient comeback that saw Archer return to Test cricket after a four-year battle with elbow and back injuries.
The 30-year-old took 5-53 in the first innings at Adelaide—his first five-wicket haul in six years—and registered his maiden Test half-century. However, he was restricted to just 12.4 overs in the second innings as the strain took hold.
“The effort he’s put in over these three games has been exceptional,” said captain Ben Stokes. “He’s put in a great effort for the team.”
Archer will return to the UK for assessment, with his availability for February’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka now in question.
With the urn already lost, England have made ruthless changes for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne:
Jacob Bethell replaces Ollie Pope at number three.
Gus Atkinson replaces the injured Archer.
Matthew Fisher has been called up to the squad following Mark Wood’s earlier exit, though he does not make the immediate XI.
England XI for 4th Test: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue.
Ollie Pope becomes the first major casualty of the failed campaign. The 27-year-old has struggled for form, averaging just 24.38 in his last seven Tests and failing to score a half-century in eight matches against Australia.
