Albanese Announces National Bravery Awards & Gun Reform

Prime Minister Anthony

SYDNEY : Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed plans to establish a special honours system to recognize civilians and first responders who risked their lives during the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack.

The December 14 massacre, described as an ISIS-motivated antisemitic attack, claimed 15 lives during a beachside Hanukkah celebration. Speaking alongside NSW Premier Chris Minns at a Christmas Day lunch for the Exodus Foundation, the Prime Minister praised those who “rushed to danger.”

Recognizing Heroes The proposed honours will sit within the existing Australian Honours and Awards system. Among those expected to be recognized is Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-Australian Muslim who was wounded while successfully disarming one of the assailants.

“This Christmas is a different one,” Albanese said. “At the same time as we have seen the worst of humanity, we have seen the bravery, kindness, and compassion from those who confronted the worst of evil.”

A new ban on the public display of terrorist symbols and expanded police powers to restrict public gatherings in specific areas.

Premier Chris Minns emphasized that while gun reform cannot solve hatred, restricting access to weapons is a critical step in preventing future violence.
