CANBERRA — In one of the most significant international child protection operations of the year, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Philippines National Police (PNP) have successfully removed 92 children from harm.
The year-long investigation has led to 18 alleged facilitators being charged in the Philippines, with 13 Australian nationals now facing serious criminal proceedings for their involvement in the “vile demand” for child exploitation.
A 69-year-old man recently pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including sexual intercourse with a child outside Australia. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison.
In February, a 74-year-old West Australian man was sentenced to 23 years in jail for the abuse of 15 children both in person and over the internet.
AFP Commander Helen Schneider issued a stern warning to those who believe they can evade justice by offending outside Australian borders. “Every action online is traceable,” Schneider stated. “Just because the offending may not happen in Australia, we will still find you.”
The AFP emphasized that they are committed to identifying those exploiting children for “disgusting gratification” and putting them before the courts, regardless of where the crime occurs.
