SYDNEY : NSW Health has issued an urgent public health alert after four people were hospitalized following an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District.
Health authorities have identified a potential exposure zone centered around Clarence Street and the Wynyard area. Anyone who has visited these locations since December 9 is being urged to monitor closely for symptoms.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. Dr. Vicky Sheppeard, a representative for NSW Health, confirmed that all four patients currently remain in hospital for treatment.
“Symptoms can develop up to 10 days after exposure and include fever, chills, a cough, and shortness of breath,” Dr. Sheppeard said. “This can lead to severe chest infections such as pneumonia.”
While anyone can contract the illness, those at significantly higher risk include:
Elderly individuals
People with underlying lung or serious health conditions
Current or former smokers
NSW Health is currently investigating the source of the outbreak. If you were in the identified areas and develop a fever or respiratory issues, you are advised to consult a doctor immediately and inform them of your travel history to the CBD.
