More than 40,000 pyrotechnic effects created a show in the sky.

SYDNEY : The iconic Sydney Harbour was transformed into a beacon of resilience on Wednesday night as more than one million people gathered to usher in 2026. Coming just weeks after the nation’s deadliest terror attack at Bondi Beach, the celebration served as a defiant rejection of fear and a powerful message of global unity.

Some people slept overnight to secure the best spots from which to watch the fireworks.

The evening was marked by poignant tributes to the 15 victims of the December 14 attack. An hour before the midnight countdown, the sprawling crowds fell into a profound one-minute silence. In a display of solidarity with the Jewish community, thousands of revellers illuminated the harbour foreshore with their phone torches.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was turned blue in memory of the 15 people killed on December 14.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, the night’s centerpiece, glowed in a deep “peace blue,” while its pylons featured projected images of a menorah and white doves. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore noted that the tributes were a way to “reflect on the atrocity and say we will not let this hateful act of terror divide us.”

Plenty of supplies brought in to see through hours of waiting before the big show.

Despite a visible and “enormous” police presence, including heavily armed officers, the atmosphere remained joyous. NSW Premier Chris Minns had previously urged residents to “thumb their noses” at the fear terrorists sought to instill.

“We have to show defiance in the face of this terrible crime,” Minns said earlier in the day. “We’re not going to be cowered.”

The crowd was asked to show solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community by shining their phone torches across the harbour.

Revellers who braved the heat and the crowds were rewarded with what was described as the city’s most ambitious display to date.

Over 40,000 effects launched from the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and six city rooftops.

The 9pm ‘Calling Country’ segment, led by We Are Warriors, shared stories of resilience and love through Indigenous art and music.

An image of a menorah is projected onto the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The words peace and unity were also shown.

The show featured “waterfalls” of fire off the bridge and pyrotechnic shapes of native flora, including waratahs and bottle brush.

As the final sparks faded over the water, the message for 2026 was clear: Sydney remains a vibrant, inclusive, and unshakeable city.
