Calum McFarlane’s Whirlwind First 24 Hours as Chelsea Boss

LONDON : Chelsea’s interim manager Calum McFarlane has described his first 24 hours in the role as a “whirlwind” after being catapulted from the youth ranks to the helm of the first team following the shock departure of Enzo Maresca.

McFarlane, who previously led Chelsea’s Under-21 side, saw his security credentials upgraded to the first-team building overnight. His first task? Preparing the Blues for a high-stakes trip to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The sudden shift in leadership comes after Enzo Maresca’s 18-month tenure ended abruptly. Despite a successful first season that yielded both the Conference League and the Club World Cup, Maresca’s relationship with the club’s hierarchy reportedly reached a breaking point this week, leading to his exit.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours, as you can imagine, but it’s also been really enjoyable and exciting,” McFarlane told reporters after leading his first senior training session. “The energy and enthusiasm in training was exceptional today. They seem really focused, driven, and hungry.”

McFarlane inherits a squad currently sitting in fifth place as the Premier League enters its second half. With only three points separating them from Liverpool in the top four—and just three points keeping them ahead of 11th-place Fulham—the margin for error is razor-thin.

While McFarlane steadies the ship, the search for a permanent replacement is already underway. Liam Rosenior, currently managing French side Strasbourg within the same ownership group, has emerged as a frontrunner for the vacant position.
