Darwin, 06 January:

Steve Smith made the most of his opportunity at the Sydney Cricket Ground, reaching a landmark century in style and writing his name deeper into cricket history. The Australian captain brought up his hundred with an energetic three-run shot off Jacob Bethell to square leg, deliberately pushing hard between the wickets to reach the cherished milestone.

Although Smith could have conserved energy by settling for singles, this occasion was special. The 36-year-old had been waiting 12 innings for a Test century, his last coming against Sri Lanka in Galle in February 2025. After completing the three runs, Smith raised his bat and helmet to acknowledge the roaring applause of more than 46,000 spectators at the SCG.

This was the 37th Test century of Smith’s illustrious career, allowing him to move past Indian legend Rahul Dravid (36) and claim sole fifth place on the all-time list. Ahead of him now are Kumar Sangakkara (38), joint third Joe Root and Ricky Ponting (41), Jacques Kallis (45), and at the summit, Sachin Tendulkar with 51 centuries.

Smith also surpassed another iconic name with this innings. By scoring his 13th Ashes century, he moved ahead of England great Sir Jack Hobbs to take second place on the list of most hundreds in the prestigious series. Only the legendary Sir Don Bradman, with 19 Ashes centuries at an astonishing average of 99.94, remains ahead.

At stumps on Day Three, Smith was unbeaten on 129 from 205 balls, striking 15 fours and one six. He was well supported by Beau Webster, who remained not out on 42. Earlier, Travis Head had played a commanding knock of 163, helping Australia secure a first-innings lead of 134 runs.

Australia closed the day on 518 for 7 and will resume on Day Four in a strong position. For England, Brydon Carse picked up three wickets, while Joe Root had earlier scored a century as England posted 384 in their first innings.

Smith’s century not only steadied Australia but also marked another historic chapter in a career defined by consistency, resilience, and record-breaking feats.
