SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND : Australia has surged to within seven runs of England’s first-innings total, powered by a blistering century from Travis Head on Day 3 of the fifth Ashes Test.
At the tea break, the hosts sat at 377/6, trailing England’s 384 by a mere seven runs. With skipper Steve Smith looking immovable on 65 not out, Australia appears poised to take a significant lead as they look to put the finishing touches on a dominant 3-1 series victory.
The story of the morning was Travis Head, who notched his third century of what has been a career-defining series. Head played with characteristic aggression, bludgeoning 163 runs off just 166 deliveries. His innings finally came to an end when he was trapped LBW by debutant Jacob Bethell while attempting a sweep.
England’s bowling attack struggled to contain the run rate on a flattening SCG deck. Matthew Potts, brought in for his first appearance of the series, endured a difficult outing, conceding 124 runs in his 24 overs.
Brydon Carse provided the most resistance for the visitors, removing nightwatchman Michael Neser (24) and Usman Khawaja (17). England’s frustration was compounded when they exhausted their final DRS review on an unsuccessful LBW shout against Neser earlier in the session.
Just before the break, Alex Carey (16) fell to Josh Tongue, caught at leg slip. However, with Smith well-set and Cameron Green (8*) beginning to find his rhythm, the momentum remains firmly with the Australians in front of a capacity Sydney crowd.
