Public Holiday Rules, Double Demerits & Events

Many people will spend the Australia Day long weekend at the beach.

MELBOURN: As Australia Day 2026 approaches, millions are preparing for the national public holiday. Whether you are heading to the beach, the local pub, or a backyard BBQ, staying informed on road rules and holiday entitlements is essential for a stress-free break.

Authorities are urging motorists to take extra care on the roads this long weekend. Double demerit points will be in effect across several jurisdictions to deter dangerous driving.

Double demerits apply from Friday, January 23, to Monday, January 26.

While there is no specific holiday period, double demerits apply year-round for repeat offences committed within 12 months.

Double demerits do not apply during this period.

Temperatures are tipped to reach 27 degrees in Adelaide on Australia Day.

Since January 26 falls on a Monday in 2026, it is a confirmed national public holiday.

Do I get the day off? Most employees are entitled to a day off with base pay, though this depends on individual employment contracts and award rates.

If you are required to work on Monday, check your agreement for public holiday penalty rates.

The long weekend kicks off with the Australian of the Year Awards on Sunday, January 25, at 7:30 PM. This prestigious event celebrates extraordinary citizens making an impact in their communities.

For a full list of community events, citizenship ceremonies, and parades on Monday, January 26, residents are encouraged to visit the official Australia Day website or their local council’s portal.
