Katherine Bennell Pegg— Australian of the Year 2026

Katherine Bennell Pegg

Darwin, 25 January: Astronaut and space engineer Katherine Bennell-Pegg has been named Australia’s 2026 Australian of the Year, one of the country’s highest civilian honours. The announcement was made at the national awards ceremony in Canberra on 25 January 2026.

Bennell-Pegg made history in 2024 when she became the first person to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag, completing astronaut training at the European Astronaut Centre.

Her qualification makes her eligible for future missions to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a major milestone for Australia’s growing space program.

Her journey began at school, where she famously wrote down only one ambition for her future: to become an astronaut. That lifelong dream, backed by years of dedication and technical excellence, has now placed her among Australia’s most influential figures.

Before receiving the national honour, Bennell-Pegg was named South Australia’s Australian of the Year on 15 November 2025, a key step in the selection process for the national award.

In addition to her technical achievements, Bennell-Pegg is widely recognised as a leader in science and space technology and a strong advocate for STEM education. She regularly engages with students and young professionals, encouraging the next generation of scientists, engineers and explorers to pursue ambitious goals.

Speaking previously about her work, Bennell-Pegg said she hopes her journey will inspire others to believe that big dreams are achievable through perseverance and curiosity.

Alongside Bennell-Pegg, the 2026 Australian of the Year Awards also recognised outstanding contributions across the country, including honours for Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero recipients.

Katherine Bennell-Pegg’s recognition reflects not only her personal achievements but also Australia’s expanding role in global space exploration — demonstrating what is possible when ambition meets opportunity.
