Darwin, 21 February:

FIFA is considering the introduction of a new rule aimed at strengthening action against racism in football. The move follows fresh controversy surrounding alleged racial abuse directed at Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior during a UEFA Champions League match.

According to reports from Sky Sports News, football’s governing body is reviewing possible amendments to ensure racist remarks on the pitch are more effectively punished.

The incident reportedly involved a player attempting to conceal his words by pulling his jersey over his mouth while speaking to Vinícius, who plays for Real Madrid. The gesture was widely interpreted as an attempt to avoid being captured on camera.

FIFA’s Players’ Voice Committee, which advises on potential changes to the Laws of the Game, is expected to examine the matter. If approved, the proposed rule could introduce stricter disciplinary measures for players found guilty of racist behavior.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly stated that racism has no place in football or society, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to taking firm action against discrimination.
