Darwin, 05 May: Bangladesh has reported its deadliest single day in the ongoing measles outbreak, with 17 children dying in the past 24 hours, according to the (DGHS).
Of the deaths recorded on Monday, 15 children died with measles-like symptoms, while two deaths were confirmed to be caused by . This marks the highest number of child deaths linked to measles and its symptoms in a single day.
Health officials said that since March 15, a total of 311 children have died nationwide either from confirmed measles or related symptoms over the past one and a half months. Among them, 52 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed as measles cases, while 259 children died after showing symptoms consistent with the disease.
During the same period, 5,467 children have tested positive for measles, while 41,793 others have been admitted to hospitals with suspected symptoms.
The outbreak has been most severe in the , which has recorded the highest number of infections and fatalities. A total of 161 children have died in the division alone, while 22,705 children have been infected.
In the last 24 hours, Dhaka Division again reported the highest number of cases and deaths, accounting for 12 of the 17 fatalities.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as concerns grow over the rapid spread of the disease among children across the country.
