Darwin, 29 May : The United Nations has reportedly placed Israel on a “blacklist” over allegations of sexual violence in conflict zones, prompting a strong reaction from Tel Aviv.
On Thursday, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, confirmed the development and condemned the move, calling it “politically motivated” and “detached from reality.”
According to a report by , Israel has suspended relations with the office of UN Secretary-General in protest against the decision.
Since October 2023, several human rights organizations and international media outlets, including , have published reports alleging rape and other forms of sexual violence by Israeli forces against Palestinians. The UN’s decision is believed to have followed growing scrutiny over those allegations.
The Jerusalem Post first reported the blacklisting, stating that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) had been included in the 2026 list. The report added that several other Israeli institutions are being monitored for possible inclusion in the future.
Expressing anger over the move, Ambassador Danon accused the UN Secretary-General of placing Israel in the same category as groups such as and . He argued that the decision reflects a decline in the UN’s moral standing and further damages the organization’s credibility.
The blacklist is published as part of the UN Secretary-General’s annual report on conflict-related sexual violence, identifying parties accused of rape and other forms of sexual violence during armed conflicts.
