Darwin, 05 June: In the traditional annual festival known as Grindadráp or Grind, over 700 whales and dolphins were brutally slaughtered in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic. The mass killing of hundreds of marine animals turned the ocean waters blood-red. Local residents drive Atlantic white-sided dolphins and long-finned pilot whales into shallow bays using hooks and knives, where the animals are then killed near the shore.
The marine conservation NGO Sea Shepherd reported that on May 27, three separate hunts took place just 200 miles from Scotland. In the capital Tórshavn, 402 pilot whales and 4 bottlenose dolphins were killed; in Skálabotnur, 168 white-sided dolphins were slaughtered; and in Vágar, 132 white-sided dolphins were killed. In total, 706 marine mammals were killed in a single day.

The report highlighted that the killings took a long time, leaving the trapped animals to endure prolonged pain and suffering. The NGO said the scale of this hunt is unprecedented, accounting for more than two-thirds of all marine mammals killed on the islands over the past year.
Sea Shepherd also noted that the hunts were marked by severe chaos among the hunters. Some hunters admitted there was a shortage of the required spinal lances for dolphin kills. As a result, many animals were killed using only knives, subjecting them to extended periods of extreme suffering before bleeding to death.
Valentina Crast, the Faroe Islands Campaign Director for Sea Shepherd, said, “No one can justify inflicting such extreme suffering on these innocent creatures.” She urged European governments to ban the annual slaughter.
Supporters of the practice claim it is a tradition dating back 1,000 years to the Viking era. However, animal rights activists have condemned the mass killings, calling it a barbaric, outdated ritual that is no longer necessary in the modern age.
Meanwhile, the Faroe Islands’ administration, as an autonomous region of Denmark, defended the practice, stating it is an important cultural activity that provides a food source for the local community.
