Darwin, 20 June : Playing on home soil, the United States dominated from start to finish to secure a convincing 2–0 win against Australia. With this victory, the hosts booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a game to spare.
Meanwhile, despite a fighting performance, Australia were undone by defensive errors and missed opportunities.
From the opening minutes, the USA controlled possession and piled pressure on Australia. The breakthrough came in the 11th minute, but it was gifted by a costly mistake from Australian defender Cameron Burgess.
In an attempt to clear a cross from a US winger, he inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The early setback left Tony Popovic’s side struggling to recover for the remainder of the first half.
The USA recorded an impressive 88% passing accuracy in the first half (259 successful passes), while Australia managed only 78 successful passes.

Despite going ahead, the USA continued to attack with intent. Just before halftime in the 43rd minute, Alex Freeman doubled the lead, sending the Lumen Field crowd into celebration.
A powerful 22-yard strike from Sergiño Dest deflected off a defender and dropped inside the box, where Freeman reacted quickly to head the ball into the net.
Although the assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, a lengthy VAR review confirmed the goal. Freeman’s perfectly timed run was rewarded as the USA went into the break 2–0 up.
After the interval, Australia head coach Tony Popovic made a triple substitution, bringing on Connor Metcalfe, Jason Geria, and Nestory Irankunda in place of Burgess, Toure, and Velupillay in an attempt to change the momentum.
The tactical shift gave Australia some early energy in the second half, but it was not enough to break through a well-organised US defence. In the closing stages, Australia tried to rely on physical play to get back into the match, but Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive setup held firm.
In the end, the USA comfortably closed out a 2–0 victory. With back-to-back wins and 6 points, they strengthened their position at the top of Group D and officially secured qualification for the knockout stage.
