Darwin, 21 June : Former U.S. President has criticized the Trump administration’s agreement with Iran, arguing that the situation has effectively returned to where it was before the conflict began — and may even be worse.
In an interview with NBC’s Today Show co-host , Obama said the war had resulted in significant loss of life without producing a clear improvement in the overall situation.
“A lot of people have died, and now it seems we are back to where we were before the war started. The only difference is that the situation may be somewhat worse than it was before,” Obama said, according to a report by .
Despite his criticism, Obama welcomed the ongoing ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that it would hold.
“I’m very pleased to see the ceasefire, and I’m hopeful that it will be maintained,” he said.
Obama also questioned the justification for the Trump administration’s military actions against Iran. He pointed out that under the nuclear agreement reached during his presidency, Iran had agreed not to pursue the development of nuclear weapons.
The former president further argued that the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from that deal contributed to Iran expanding its nuclear capabilities in the years that followed.
“This administration, or an earlier version of this administration, withdrew from that agreement, which ultimately allowed Iran to gain greater nuclear capabilities,” Obama said.
Obama’s remarks come amid continued debate in Washington over the effectiveness of U.S. policy toward Iran and the long-term consequences of abandoning the original nuclear accord.
