Ecuador Reach World Cup Knockout Stage After Stunning Victory Over Germany

plata goal vs germany2

Darwin, 26 June : Latin American side Ecuador booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating four-time world champions Germany.

In a dramatic Group E finale on Friday (Bangladesh time), La Tri secured a direct place in the Round of 32 with a memorable 2-1 victory over the German powerhouse.

In front of a packed crowd at MetLife Stadium in the United States, Ecuador produced a remarkable comeback from an early setback to claim a historic win.

Germany made a dream start to the match. Just two minutes after kickoff, Leroy Sané put Die Mannschaft ahead with a brilliant finish following an assist from Florian Wirtz.

However, Ecuador responded immediately. In the ninth minute, Nilson Angulo capitalized on a swift counterattack, dribbled past Aleksandar Pavlović, and fired a superb long-range strike from outside the penalty area, beating Manuel Neuer to level the score at 1-1. The first half ended all square, while the goal also ended Germany’s run of nine consecutive World Cup matches without conceding.

Germany thought they had earned a penalty in the 62nd minute after Kai Havertz was brought down in the box by Ordóñez. However, following a VAR review, the referee ruled that Sané had committed a foul earlier in the attacking move. The penalty decision was overturned, and Ecuador were awarded a free kick instead. Shortly afterward, Neuer produced an outstanding save to deny Enner Valencia.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute. From a set-piece, Kevin Rodríguez headed the ball into the path of Gonzalo Plata, who struck a powerful shot from the edge of the box to beat Neuer and send the MetLife Stadium crowd into celebration.

Ecuador held firm defensively until the final whistle to secure a famous 2-1 victory. The win also marked the country’s first successful progression beyond the World Cup group stage since 2006.

Despite the defeat, Germany finished top of Group E with six points and a superior goal difference (+6), having already secured qualification by winning their opening two matches.

Ecuador climbed to second place with four points, sealing direct qualification for the Round of 32 as group runners-up.

Meanwhile, in the other Group E fixture, Ivory Coast defeated Curaçao to finish with six points. Although they ended third on goal difference, they advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Curaçao, with just one point from three matches, were eliminated from the competition.
