Darwin, June 27: Cape Verde secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the World Cup after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H match on Saturday morning (Bangladesh time) in Houston.

With three consecutive draws, Cape Verde finished as group runners-up with 3 points, booking their spot in the Round of 32.

In the other group match, Spain defeated Uruguay 1–0. With two wins and one draw from three matches, Spain topped the group with 7 points. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay were eliminated with 2 points each.

Making their first-ever World Cup appearance, Cape Verde have created history by reaching the knockout stage. The nation, with a population of just 593,000, has progressed to the next round in its debut tournament. They will now face reigning champions Argentina in the Round of 32.

Despite entering the match with confidence after drawing against Spain and Uruguay, Cape Verde struggled to find their rhythm against Saudi Arabia. However, Saudi Arabia—having previously lost 4–0 to Spain—also failed to produce their best performance.

Early in the match, possession was fairly balanced, and neither side created any significant chances before the first hydration break. Cape Verde showed more attacking intent afterward but failed to seriously test the Saudi goalkeeper.

In first-half stoppage time, Saudi Arabia created the first notable chance of the match. A cross from Sultan Mandoš found Mohammed Kanno inside the six-yard box, but Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozínia comfortably collected the header.

After the break, Cape Verde increased their attacking efforts, but Monteiro’s shot was easily handled by Al-Owaisi. In the 74th minute, Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper made a crucial save in a one-on-one situation, denying Laros Duarte with an excellent outstretched leg.

Late in the match, Nuno da Costa missed a clear opportunity, and the game ended in a goalless draw. However, for Cape Verde, the draw felt like a victory. At the final whistle, the players celebrated wildly, dancing and rejoicing at their historic qualification to the knockout stage.
