Darwin, 05 July : France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16.

Despite wave after wave of attacks in the scorching heat of Philadelphia, France struggled to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defense. Although Les Bleus dominated possession with 80 percent of the ball in the first half, they failed to find the breakthrough before substitute Désiré Doué helped change the course of the match.

Kylian Mbappé eventually scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, giving Didier Deschamps’ side a 1-0 lead. The lone strike proved enough to end Paraguay’s World Cup campaign.

The goal also marked Mbappé’s seventh of the tournament, as the French captain reached another significant milestone.

From the opening whistle at Philadelphia Stadium, France controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the match.

The French registered six shots in the first half while enjoying 80 percent possession, but managed to seriously test Paraguay’s goalkeeper only once. Paraguay, meanwhile, spent most of the half defending deep. With just 20 percent possession, the South Americans attempted two shots, neither of which was on target.

Both before and after the first-half hydration break, Paraguay’s defense remained compact, successfully denying France space inside the penalty area.

Tensions flared in the 36th minute after Mbappé was fouled just outside the Paraguay box. Frustrated by the referee’s decision, the French captain lightly shoved Paraguay midfielder Andrés Cubas, triggering a brief confrontation between players from both sides.

The referee quickly restored order, and no cards were shown.

France continued to press after the break, but Paraguay’s resolute backline kept frustrating the attacking trio of Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and company.

Looking to break the deadlock, Deschamps made his first substitution in the 61st minute, replacing Bradley Barcola with Désiré Doué. The tactical change immediately paid off.

Soon after coming on, Doué dribbled into the Paraguay penalty area, where he was brought down by defenders. Although the referee initially waved play on despite strong French appeals, he later reviewed the incident on the VAR monitor and awarded a penalty.

Mbappé calmly converted the spot kick in the 70th minute before celebrating with his trademark leap.

The goal took the French captain’s tally to seven in this World Cup, drawing him level with Lionel Messi as the tournament’s joint-leading scorer.

It also moved Mbappé to within one goal of Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 20 goals.
