Bangladesh Calls for Stronger Action to Prevent Nuclear Weapons Proliferation

IMG 20260429 WA0013

Darwin, 29 April : Bangladesh has called for renewed global commitment and coordinated, effective measures to advance nuclear disarmament and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The appeal was made by Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, during the general debate at the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), held মঙ্গলবার at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In his বক্তব্য, the ambassador stated that even after eight decades since the প্রতিষ্ঠা of the United Nations, the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world remains unrealized. He warned that the continued spread of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat to international peace and security and undermines global development efforts.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s longstanding position on disarmament, he said the country has consistently supported both nuclear and conventional disarmament and has voluntarily remained a non-nuclear-weapon state despite being located in a region with nuclear-armed countries.

He also urged nuclear-armed states to fulfill their legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT and emphasized the importance of universal adherence to international disarmament agreements.

The ambassador further highlighted Bangladesh’s commitment to building a safer world free from nuclear threats through constructive dialogue, mutual trust, and coordinated global initiatives.

He concluded by stating that Bangladesh will continue to work closely with the international community to ensure a peaceful, stable, and secure world for future generations.
