Darwin, 15 May: Bangladesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States on strategic cooperation in the energy sector. Under the agreement, Bangladesh will have the opportunity to import LNG, LPG, and other energy products from the United States. The deal will also support research and capacity building in geothermal energy and bioenergy.
The MoU was signed on Thursday morning local time at the US Department of Energy (DoE) in Washington, D.C.
Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while US Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed on behalf of the United States.
According to a press release issued by the Bangladesh Embassy, the agreement comes at a time when global energy security has become increasingly uncertain due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The MoU is expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s long-term energy security and create new opportunities for importing energy at affordable prices.
The statement further said the agreement would enhance cooperation between the two countries in the fields of oil, gas, geothermal energy, and bioenergy through the exchange of knowledge and expertise, research, and capacity-building initiatives. Bangladesh will also gain access to LNG, LPG, and other energy imports from the United States.

Speaking briefly at the signing ceremony, Dr. Khalilur Rahman described the agreement as a new milestone in Bangladesh-US relations. He thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US President Donald Trump for their support behind the initiative.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, on the other hand, termed the agreement a “historic development” in relations between the two countries.
Officials from the Bangladesh Embassy and senior representatives of the US Department of Energy were present at the ceremony.
