Confident Australia ready to challenge “favourites” Türkiye in World Cup clash

Darwin, 14 June : Türkiye return to the World Cup stage after a long 24-year absence, with expectations running high around a talented squad and renewed ambition. They will begin their Group D campaign against Australia in Vancouver at 10:00 AM (Bangladesh time) on June 14.

Having last appeared in the 2002 World Cup—where they famously finished third after a remarkable run—Türkiye have returned to the global stage after years of absence. This time, they secured qualification through the European play-offs, marking their third World Cup appearance overall.

Australia, meanwhile, arrive at their sixth consecutive World Cup, having qualified comfortably through the Asian qualifying third round. Unlike Türkiye, they also featured in the Round of 16 in the previous edition, giving them valuable tournament experience.

Despite Australia’s consistency, Türkiye are being viewed by many as slight favourites due to their current form and squad strength. FIFA rankings also reflect a close contest, with Türkiye ranked 23rd and Australia 27th.

Head-to-head history favors the Turkish side, who have won both of their previous meetings against Australia. However, those encounters came in 2004, making this their first meeting in 22 years—and their first-ever World Cup clash.

Australia head coach Tony Popovic remains confident his side can defy expectations. “Hopefully we can show some great Australian football and demonstrate what we are capable of,” he said ahead of the match. “We are confident in that.”

Popovic also addressed the lack of external expectations surrounding his team. “Not many people expect much from us, but we are used to that,” he added.

Looking ahead to the challenge, he warned Türkiye against expecting a smooth start to their campaign. “Türkiye are expecting to win, most people do. But what we can do is try to spoil their celebration,” he said.

For Türkiye, the match carries emotional weight as they return to football’s biggest stage after two decades. Head coach Vincenzo Montella highlighted the team’s mindset, saying: “We are naturally emotional, but we believe we can perform well. We know the challenge of the World Cup. We want to enjoy it and make our country proud.”

Group D also features hosts USA and Paraguay. In the group’s opening match, USA began their campaign with a commanding 4–1 victory over Paraguay.
