Darwin, 11 July : Italy will not participate in any military operation against Iran, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed on Wednesday as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Meloni said Italy has maintained a clear position on the issue since the beginning of the conflict.
“Since the conflict with Iran began, our position has been very clear. We will not take part in any attacks against Iran,” Meloni said.
Earlier this year in March, Italy refused to allow US military aircraft heading toward the Middle East to land at the Sigonella Air Base in Sicily. The move was seen as a clear indication of Rome’s intention to avoid direct military involvement in the crisis.
At the conclusion of the NATO summit in Ankara, Meloni was asked whether she had any second thoughts about the political investment she had made in building a relationship with US President Donald Trump.
“No, I have no regrets about what I have done,” she replied.
Trump publicly criticized Meloni for the first time in April. Before that, Meloni had criticized Trump’s remarks regarding Pope Leo XIV, particularly in connection with the Pope’s position on the Iran war.
