Sports Desk: “We Fear No One”: Yamal Sends Warning to EnglandSpain winger Lamine Yamal has insisted that the reigning European champions fear no opponent as they prepare to face France in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, brushing aside criticism over his earlier comments about Les Bleus.
The first semifinal of the tournament will see two European heavyweights, Spain and France, battle for a place in the final.
The build-up has already been marked by a war of words, with Spain entering the contest full of confidence after edging France 5-4 in the UEFA Euro semifinal.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Yamal was asked about his previous remark that “if France fear anyone, it’s Spain.” The 18-year-old said his comments had been taken out of context.
“I was asked whether I was afraid of France, and I said no,” Yamal explained. “We are the European champions. We don’t fear any team. This is football, and they can interpret my words however they want.”
Yamal has also faced criticism over his performances at the World Cup. Despite featuring in all six of Spain’s matches, he has scored just once — in the 4-0 group-stage victory over Saudi Arabia — and is yet to register an assist.
The young forward, however, dismissed concerns about his form and expressed confidence in Spain’s progress throughout the tournament.
“We’ve become much more mature as a team,” he said. “We went through a difficult spell against Cape Verde and learned from it. I don’t feel any pressure.
If everyone says I’m not at my best, then they shouldn’t expect anything special from me on Tuesday.”
Spain will be looking to continue their impressive run and book a place in the World Cup final with another victory over France.
