Sports Desk: Spain midfielder Rodri was named the winner of the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after inspiring his country to a second world title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final.
The Spanish midfield maestro beat off competition from football’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, to claim the tournament’s top individual honour. Messi received the Silver Ball, while France captain Mbappé was awarded the Bronze Ball.
Rodri was the heartbeat of Spain throughout the tournament, dictating play from midfield with his composure, vision and exceptional passing. His ability to control possession and orchestrate attacks proved crucial in Spain’s march to the title.
The Manchester City star also topped the tournament’s passing charts, completing 655 successful passes during the World Cup. His Spain teammate Pau Cubarsí finished second on the list.
Following Spain’s dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final, FIFA’s Technical Study Group selected Rodri as the tournament’s outstanding player.
The World Cup triumph also elevated Rodri into an exclusive group in football history. He became only the 11th player to win the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d’Or, completing one of the sport’s most prestigious career trebles.
With the achievement, Rodri joins an elite list of football legends that includes Sir Bobby Charlton, Gerd Müller, Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi. His latest success further cements his place among the game’s greatest midfielders of his generation.
