Democrats Take Control of the Senate, Delivering Political Blow to Trump
Darwin, November 4: The Democratic Party has secured a major victory in the US midterm elections, taking control of the Senate following an unexpected win…
Darwin, November 4: Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is a prominent Democratic politician who served two terms as the state’s governor. By winning a Senate seat in the midterm elections, he is now set to play a more significant role in national politics.
Democrats have won a Senate election in North Carolina for the first time in 18 years. The last time a Democratic candidate won a Senate seat in the state was in 2008, when Kay Hagan was elected. Since then, Roy Cooper has become the first Democrat to win one of North Carolina’s two Senate seats. He will replace outgoing Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who decided not to seek a third term.
During the election campaign, Cooper’s opponent was Michael Whatley, former chairman of the Republican National Committee. Since securing the Democratic nomination, Cooper had consistently led Whatley in opinion polls.
In this year’s elections, voters are choosing representatives for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats, as well as several state-level positions, including governorships and other local offices.
Currently, Republicans control both chambers of Congress—the Senate and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the US Congress. Its members are elected for two-year terms. Legislative proposals are generally introduced and debated in the House before being sent to the Senate for consideration.
