U.S. Signs Historic and Major Trade Deal with Japan

Trump Announces Historic and Major Trade Deal with Japan
Trump Announces Historic and Major Trade Deal with Japan

Melbourne, July 23 — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a significant trade agreement with Japan. He stated that the United States has signed a “massive trade deal” with the East Asian economic powerhouse.

According to reports, under this deal, Japan—one of the world’s largest economic partners—will invest $550 billion in the United States. The news was reported by the BBC.

Speaking at a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday local time, President Trump said,

“I’ve probably signed the biggest trade deal in history—with Japan.
This is a good deal for everyone. We’ve worked hard on this. I always say—it must be a win-win for both sides.”

Trump claimed that, as part of the agreement, Japan will impose a 15% reciprocal tariff and will open its market to U.S. automobiles, trucks, rice, and agricultural products. Additionally, Japan will invest $550 billion in the United States.

Japan’s chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, wrote on social media that he participated in the discussions at the White House and referred to the mission as “accomplished.”

According to the BBC, they have contacted the Japanese embassy in Washington for more details about the agreement. Earlier this month, President Trump warned Japan that if no agreement was reached by August 1, a 25% tariff would be imposed on Japanese goods.

Just before this warning, in April, Trump had announced plans to impose a 24% tariff—though the decision was later put on hold for 90 days to allow room for negotiations with Japan and other countries.

Under the “Liberation Day” policy announced in April, the U.S. decided to impose unilateral tariffs on several major trading partners, causing volatility in global stock markets.

Currently, vehicles imported into the United States from many countries, including Japan, face a 25% tariff. However, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK, this may be reduced for Japanese automakers.

The BBC noted that the announcement comes at a time when Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is facing political pressure. His Liberal Democratic Party recently lost control of the upper house in the latest elections.

Trump also stated that a trade agreement with the European Union (EU) would be announced on Wednesday and that several more deals would be signed soon.
