Melbourne, 25 July — French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly session in September. He made the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday night (July 24).
In his post, Macron wrote, “The most urgent priority right now is to end the ongoing war in Gaza and to save civilian lives. Peace is possible, but we need a ceasefire now. All hostages must be released, and urgent humanitarian aid must be delivered to the people of Gaza.”
He also stressed the necessity of disarming Hamas, stating that “Gaza must be made safe and rebuilt. We must ensure an environment where a Palestinian state can be established and sustained. For that, Palestine must agree to disarmament.”
Macron reaffirmed his stance on the full recognition of Israel, saying, “Establishing peace will require full recognition of Israel. The people of France want peace in the Middle East. All of our partners—French, Israeli, Palestinian, European, and international—must prove that peace is achievable.”
Regarding this commitment, he stated that he has written to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, assuring him of France’s promise. “Now we need trust, transparency, and commitment,” Macron emphasized.
